In an event run by Willoughby Environmental Protection Association in partnership with Willoughby City Council, join leading urban ecologist Dr John Martin to get a glimpse into the life of Sydney’s birds. At Dougherty Community Centre in Chatswood on 18 August at 6:30pm, the evening will explore how our feathered friends behave, adapt and thrive in changing urban environments.
Dr Martin will also highlight the important role citizen science can play in monitoring wildlife and habitats needed to thrive. Current projects of Dr Martin’s include wing-tagging assessment of the movement and foraging behaviour of sulphur-crested cockatoos and the homing habits of white ibis fledglings.
The evening will also see the results of the Birds of Willoughby 2026 Winter Survey announced, showing how the diversity and abundance of the local birdlife has changed over time. Bird monitoring surveys have been run in the Willoughby area for approximately 30 years, providing comparative insights.
With bird watching growing in popularity, this event provides the opportunity to learn more about local birdlife and meet other enthusiasts. All nature lovers are welcome and there’s an opportunity to win Dr Martin’s co-authored book A Guide to the Creatures in Your Neighbourhood.
