Jump on this community event in Mosman on 14 June
An event for all, the Mini-Mos Community Fun Run and Fair returns on Saturday 14 June. In its 44th consecutive year, the event features 2km, 5km and 10km running races in Mosman followed by a fair at Mosman Public School.
From Prime Ministers to NRL players and Olympic ambassadors, the event is no stranger to celebrity appearances. For organisers like Mosman Public School parent Marc Dodd, ‘The community are our main celebrities.’
Started in 1982 by a team of parents, the event aims to raise funds for the school, including for renovations, sports equipment and technology.
This legacy continues to this day, with a group of parents organising everything, ‘from talking to the council, to talking to local businesses, to making sure there are stalls.’
Last year, records were broken in funds raised went towards a new playground shade. With over 2,000 runners, the event also attracted its largest number of participants to date. Marc acknowledges that a ‘big wide range of people’ participate, attributing the ongoing ‘running craze’ as a benefit to the event.
For organisers like Marc, it’s not just about the event but about bringing the community together.
“We try and think of ourselves not just as a running race. It’s a race organised by the community for the community,” says Marc. “They’re our superstars, you know.”
From elite athletes to locals taking part in their first ever running race, anyone can take part in the racing fun.
Ed Goddard, an elite runner and Mosman local, often takes part in all the Mini-Mos races.
“He won the Sydney Hawker Half Marathon in April,” notes Marc.
“We have everyone from some of the best runners in Australia…all the way down to people who take part in their first ever (race),” says Marc.
Mini-Mos aims to ‘include all abilities,’ working with groups around Sydney to make the event more accessible.
Over the years, organisers have considered how to make the event more accessible and promote sustainability, including by using wooden medals.
Known for its community focus and vibrant atmosphere, Mini-Mos has something for everyone.
