Indie outfit Astrovan is heating up the local live music scene
They might be young, but North-Shore based Astrovan have years of experience as musicians and plenty to offer the North Shore music scene and beyond.
Founded in 2021, the indie rock band – made up of lead singer and guitarist Jai, drummer Luca, and keyboardist Jeremy – told NL that despite being based on the North Shore, they have performed at various Sydney venues.
“We tour the inner west, and there are a few venues on the Northern Beaches, a few breweries around there (that we’ve played at),” Luca says.
Jai jumps in: “Yeah, shout out to Seventh Day Brewery in Brookvale (where we performed one Saturday). There’s also a venue in Mosman we’ve played at twice called The Whalers.”
Astrovan has come a long way from their humble beginnings as a high school band, created when the boys were in Year 10 at Mosman High School, ‘just hanging out,’ playing during lunchtimes and free periods in the empty music room.
“Jai just started making music, and he needed a band,” Jeremy says. “So he gathered us up one by one, like a pumpkin patch. And we started playing together.”
After graduation, the band began working in a studio, and started releasing singles and EPs from 2023 onwards. Their most recent single, Purple Bike, became available for streaming last April.
Astrovan’s music is described as ‘alt-indie rock sprinkled with an infectious mix of rich and melodic composition.’ Purple Bike has purely five-star ratings on Triple J Unearthed. According to the band, there’s more to come, as they were about to return to the studio following our interview.
“(Our songs) are about life and life experiences, reflections of life, things that happen, things we think about or dream about,” Jai explains. “It’s definitely a step up in production and energy.”
“There’s an ode to Taylor Swift in one of (our upcoming songs),” Luca says. “It’s going to be a little heavier than our previous songs.”
Jeremy agrees: “We’ve got a lot more skill since the previous songs we’ve recorded – more cohesion as a band. It’s going to be an even more true expression of us.”
