Sydney Metro Crows Nest Station, designed by Architect Woods Bagot with Lucian Gormley as lead architect, has made it onto the shortlist of the World Architectural Festival Awards, in the Completed Buildings: Transport category.
Crows Nest Metro Station opened in August 2024, and is part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest line.
The WAF unites the global architecture community to celebrate architecture and interiors and 416 projects have made this year’s shortlist which includes categories such as completed buildings, interiors, landscapes, and visions across categories such as Creative Re-Use, Housing, Hotel, and Transport.
The WAF website described the station as ‘a refined new civic landmark that embodies design excellence while balancing major transport ambition with the intimate character of its village setting.’
“It’s crafted, modulated, brick expression grounds the station in the local streetscape, offering a contemporary interpretation of Crows Nest’s identity,” the WAF stated.
Woods Bagot principal Lucian Gormley said on the company’s website, ‘infrastructure is typically delivered at a completely different scale to our older, historic sub-urban residential communities.’
“The size and scale of the pieces – designed to be craned into place – are quite often not legible at a human scale,” he said. “Our design team worked hard to find solutions that responded to the requirement of infrastructure whilst speaking to the historic, village scale, residential aspects of the site.”
The WAF stated the project ‘achieves clarity, durability, and environmental performance, including a 6 Star Green Star rating.’
“The result is a station that is intuitive, sustainable, and deeply connected to place—elevating everyday journeys and the neighbourhood it serves,” it said.
Finalists will battle it out live in front of international judges at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, from 18 to 20 November 2026.
