National Carers Week, which runs from 11 to 19 October, will recognise and celebrate the contribution of informal carers. With the theme this year of ‘Care for a carer: Making carers visible,’ the week aims to spotlight the contribution of unpaid carers and encourages Australians to recognise, support and care for carers in their communities.
There are more than 2.7 million informal carers providing support and care to a friend or family member who has a long-term illness, disability, mental illness, alcohol or drug dependency, or who is frail due to age.
Northern Beaches Council will be hosting a number of events during National Carers Week, starting with a mental health connection information session at Northern Beaches Hospital on 13 October. The event aims to raise awareness and recognise those who support people experiencing mental health challenges. The seminar will also be held online for those who can’t make it in person.
There will be a pop-up information stand about the Carer Gateway, which offers services and support to carers, at Manly Library on 14 October, and Westfield Warringah Mall on 15 October.
A free Tai-Chi class will be held at St Kevin’s Primary School in Dee Why on 14 October.
For those looking to better understand the Aged Care system, a webinar will be held at Mona Vale Library on 19 October. The Understanding My Aged Care webinar will be presented by Carers NSW, and can also be attended live via Zoom from your home or workplace.
