Nominations for the annual Australia Day Awards are open until 27 October. The awards acknowledge outstanding contributions, specific to Northern Beaches residents, events or groups.
The nomination process involves filling out a form from council’s website and stating why the person or organisation should be celebrated.
There are seven categories for the awards: citizen of the year, senior citizen of the year, young citizen of the year, sportsperson of the year, community event of the year, community group of the year, and outstanding community service.
“Our community is full of outstanding people who give so much of themselves, often without seeking recognition or even thanks,” Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said. “Whether it’s the tireless volunteer at your local sports club, the neighbour who’s always there in a crisis, or the young person inspiring others with their passion – these are the stories that strengthen our community spirit.”
“Every day, individuals and organisations across our community go above and beyond to support others, build connections and create positive change. These Awards are a chance to recognise their valuable contributions and thank them for everything they do.”
Council is also seeking expressions of interest from residents to serve on a panel providing independent advice on selecting award recipients.
The Australia Day Awards will be presented in January 2027.
