The much-loved Aussie band will play their only Sydney Gone Coastal show at Dee Why RSL on 5 January

The Whitlams’ bittersweet storytelling and rollicking performances have made them one of Australia’s most successful touring and recording acts since the mid-1990s, when they brought piano back onto the indie airwaves.

Tim Freedman, who grew up running amok on the Northern Beaches, is riding a new wave of energy, releasing two albums since 2022, Sancho, and the Americana-influenced Kookaburra, and touring the nation seven times over the last three years.

“I did my first solo shows at 15 at the Time and Tide in Dee Why, and the Newport Arms Hotel back in 1980,” Tim says. “I recall some memorable evenings at the Manly Leagues Club around 1998 just after the band exploded, and lately I have been booking my country band at Avalon RSL.”

Dee Why RSL will be the first big show in the area by The Whitlams classic four piece in many years.

The Gone Coastal 2025 Tour will feature The Whitlams greatest hits like I Make Hamburgers and No Aphrodisiac, along with a focus on the double platinum album Love This City which the band recently toured around Australia for its 25th anniversary. The album was the follow up to the award- winning Eternal Nightcap and featured the hit singles Blow Up the Pokies and Thank You (for loving me at my worst). These songs still resonate today, with The Whitlams picking up new fans in every town, drawn by lyrics which reach deep into the soul.

Fans will be happy to hear that Tim will take time out for songwriting in 2025. “I have toured manically since 2021, and now it’s time to take my foot off the pedal and write new songs.”
