A new social housing development opened its doors in Cammeray on 20 Nov, creating homes for people at risk of homelessness and those on the social housing waitlist.
Link Wentworth’s development was delivered in partnership with North Sydney Council, and support from the NSW Government, under Round One of the Australian Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF). It features 12 apartments, with three of the units designed to be accessible for people with a disability.
The project was officially opened by Senator Jenny McAllister, Minister for Disability and the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
Link Wentworth CEO Andrew McAnulty said the site had been transformed from a single-story detached dwelling with five boarding rooms into a modern, thoughtfully designed apartment building with additional shared space.
“The new Cammeray development is a four-storey residence that will provide more than double the dwellings that were available here before and will provide residents with access to contemporary amenities and facilities,” Mr McAnulty said.
“The project includes a communal living area, shared laundry, and outdoor space. We’ve carefully designed this project to prioritise comfort and safety of residents, with easy access to shops and public transport.”
North Sydney Council Mayor Zoë Baker said tackling the current housing crisis required collaboration across all levels of government and the community housing sector.
“North Sydney Council is proud to partner with Link Wentworth to redevelop this site into high-quality accommodation for some of the most vulnerable members of our community,” Mayor Baker said.
Tenant Julie first found herself at risk of homelessness in 2020 when her son died unexpectedly and her partner left to go back to the UK, leaving her with no income. She’s now one of the first residents at Cammeray.
“I have an accessible disability room, which I need as I live with chronic pain. It’s nice, bright, new and has a huge bathroom. I use my 4-wheel walker to travel to the nearby park and cafes – it’s a good area. I feel grateful to Link Wentworth,” Julie said.
The project was designed by Become Architecture and built by Barbro Constructions. Cammeray is one of eight projects Link Wentworth is delivering under the HAFF, to support more Sydneysiders in finding safe, secure, and affordable housing.
