On Saturday 13 June, Independent Mackellar MP Sophie Scamps is hosting a free community event at Warriewood Community Centre. The Waves Without Waste Plastics Expo will draw attention to the need to reduce plastic waste.
The event aligns with Dr Scamps’ efforts in pushing for the government to implement an Extended Producer Policy (EPR) around plastic.
The EPR shifts responsibility for packaging waste from households and councils to producers and major companies.
For all ages, the event will see workshops, stalls and expert panels, alongside children’s activities and live music. Organisations such as the Australian Conservation Foundation, Surfers for Climate and Boomerang Bags will have their own plastics stalls.
Part of the expo involves an expert panel led by Dr Scamps. The speakers are filmmaker and co-founder of Blue Minds Kal Glanznig, Director of Circular Economy and Waste at The Australia Institute Nina Gbor, and sailor and climate activist Lisa Blair.
Earlier in the day, Blue Minds will host a youth workshop to empower students and provide practical tools to address climate change concerns.
