Strong social outlet for seniors in Mona Vale

If you are over 60 years old and are looking to meet some new people, you might enjoy the monthly seniors gathering at Mona Vale Surf Life Saving Club (the club).

On the first Tuesday afternoon of the month from 1pm to 4pm, you will find a group of older locals mingling merrily at the club. Some will be playing cards or scrabble. Others will be knitting or simply enjoying a chat.

Rhonda Munro organises the gatherings, which began in 2024. She’s been a club member since 1978 but stresses you don’t have be a member to join in the monthly fun.

“It’s just so people can get together,” says Rhonda. “And there’s no charge. You can come and have a chat, play scrabble, or do whatever you want.”

It is a wonderful way of getting out and talking to others for people who live alone, are widowed, or simply wish to get away from their spouse for a while – but spouses are most welcome too!

“We make everyone welcome,” says Rhonda. “Let’s face it; as people get older, they might lose a spouse and become a bit lost.”

Some people have a walk on the beach and take in the beautiful ocean views. In fact, Rhonda says that one couple from Bathurst have a holiday home in Mona Vale and drop by when they’re around.

“When they come to Sydney, they come along and sit on the balcony and sketch,” she says. “People can really do whatever activity they’d like. If people just want to go for a walk on the beach, they can, and then come back for afternoon tea.”

Afternoon tea and coffee is provided free of charge and Rhonda says she usually bakes something nice to take along.

There are occasionally talks on health, covering topics such as exercise or cholesterol, book talks with an author and even chair yoga.

“It’s a fabulous venue to come and just have afternoon tea and a chat,” says Rhonda. “And we do lots of different activities for older people.”

There will be a ‘fancier’ gathering for Christmas, Rhonda says, describing ‘a bit of a party’ on 2 December.
