Old Barrenjoey Road intersection evolves under Streets as Shared Spaces

Preparation has commenced for a six-month trial that will see a one-way shared zone on Old Barrenjoey Road, Avalon.

The change is part of the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces project, with the government and Northern Beaches Council saying the move will make it safer and easier for pedestrians to navigate the village.

Preparation for the trial is expected to be completed in December 2022 before the change will come into effect for at least six months.

Northern Beaches CEO, Ray Brownlee, says the project is an important part of the recently adopted Avalon Place Plan and is part of ‘some exciting and much-needed improvements’ to Avalon Beach village.

“After years of community consultation and detailed consideration by the elected Council, the Avalon Place Plan has been endorsed,” Mr Brownlee says.

“Our priority is creating a place for people. Streets as Shared Spaces will create a safer and more people-centred experience for locals and visitors moving through Avalon Beach village.”

During the Avalon Place Plan community consultation stage, the Avalon Parade and Old Barrenjoey Road intersection was identified as a major issue.

The main changes include a 10-kilometre per hour shared zone at Old Barrenjoey Road north; introducing one-way traffic flow in a section of the road; removing nine on-street parking spaces to provide safer pedestrian access; improving pedestrian crossings; widening footpaths; additional seating and plants; and adjusting bus and taxi services.

Council says it will be working closely with local resident associations and the wider community to seek ongoing feedback throughout the six-month trial. Traffic counts and pedestrian observation studies will also be carried out to evaluate the project.

“Together, we will create a place for people and a vibrant, safe and inclusive Avalon Beach village,” Mr Brownlee said.
