Dr Helen Haines, the independent federal MP for Indi in Victoria, is in a critical condition after being allegedly struck by a vehicle outside of her electorate office in Wangaratta on Monday afternoon. Investigations are underway and a 43-year-old man is in custody.
Fellow independent Northern Beaches and North Shore MPs have expressed their shock at the incident, as well as their support for Ms Haines, her family and the Indi community.
“I am shocked and devastated by reports that Helen Haines has been attacked outside her electorate office,” Warringah MP Zali Steggall said.
“I have worked with Helen since 2019 and sit alongside her in Parliament. She is a wonderful, caring, smart and wise friend and amazing representative for her community.
I am thinking of Helen and her wonderful family.”
In a statement posted to social media, independent Mackellar MP Dr Sophie Scamps said, “I am in utter shock and immense anger that this has happened.”
“This defies understanding. The divisive hate filled politics has to end. No more,” Dr Scamps added.
Member for Bradfield Nicolette Boele MP also made a statement to social media.
“On the crossbench, we often say, “When in doubt, be more like Helen.” I am devastated by today’s horrific attack in Wangaratta. It is hard to fathom,” she said.
