A 21-year-old jewellery thief has been extradited from Queensland, after failing to appear at Manly Local Court on 9 April. The French national had been charged with larceny.
The charge relates to an incident on 18 March, whereby the then 20-year-old man allegedly stole a gold necklace from a jewellery store in Mona Vale. The owner of the store was suspicious of the young man’s inquiries about the chain and his suspicion was confirmed when the offender tried on the chain and allegedly ran out of the store after a short tussle with the owner, fleeing in a getaway car. That same afternoon, the offender and car were tracked to Chatswood where local police were deployed and arrested the offender. Police recovered the chain, which was allegedly in the young man’s pocket.
After being charged with larceny and granted conditional bail, he failed to appear at Manly Local Court and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
The offender remained undetected until 4 August when the Queensland Police Service contacted the Northern Beaches Detectives and advised that the same offender was in custody and about to be released following property related charges.
On 5 August, Northern Beaches Detectives travelled to Southport Queensland where a Queensland Court authorised the extradition of the alleged offender to NSW. On the same day police, escorted him on a flight to Sydney and took him to Mascot Police Station where he was refused bail. The offender appeared at the Bail Court and was granted conditional bail to appear at Manly Local Court on 20 August.
