Jacqui Scruby, Independent MP for Pittwater, has criticized Ausgrid for its prolonged delays in restoring power following severe weather that impacted the area. As of Tuesday, January 21, 158 homes and businesses in Pittwater were still without electricity, six days after the storm. Ms. Scruby described the situation as “completely unacceptable,” noting that many residents were left without power for almost a week, leading to widespread frustration and inconvenience.

“Too many residents have been left in the dark for far too long,” she said. “Ausgrid’s failure to restore power promptly shows a lack of preparedness and forward planning.” Many households are struggling with no hot water, spoiled food, and cars trapped in garages. She urged Ausgrid to be better prepared for extreme weather, advocating for better tree and power line management, and the hiring of surge staff for emergencies.

Ms. Scruby also criticized Ausgrid’s lack of communication, saying, “The uncertainty has been one of the most frustrating aspects. Ausgrid should have been more upfront about the length of time people would have to wait.”

She stressed the need for a more resilient power network, citing climate change and the challenges of privatisation. “Privatisation has clearly failed to deliver the reliability and accountability our community needs,” she added.
