Greens Councillors for the Northern Beaches along with members of the community have joined forces with BirdLife Australia to ban out the use of Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs).
At a council meeting on 18 October, Cr Kristyn Glanville for Curl Curl proposed a phase out of the use of SGARs that are prominently used for rodent control by Northern Beaches council, and other organisations.
According to the Greens, rodents that are taken down by SGARs in turn become poisonous, planting the risk of killing off-target species like powerful owls, tawny frogmouths and wedge tailed eagles.
Cr Glanville along with Cr Miranda Korzy for Pittwater welcomed councils’ calls at the recent NSW local government association’s annual conference, for the state government to ban the sale of SGARS to protect wildlife from the effects of the poison.
Cr Korzy attended the conference as a Northern Beaches council delegate.
“I hope that our council can act on the advice of the experts quickly, who say other products are available that are assimilated more quickly by the target species, so as not to harm wildlife.” Cr Korzy said.
