National Science Week offers a range of activities to nurture your child’s inquisitive mind
Creepy cooking demo
Dive into the future of food and edible insects with food scientist and entomologist, Circle Harvest at Glen Street Library in Frenchs Forest. The demonstration will take place on Tuesday 18 August from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Taste crunchy insect snacks, learn why insects like crickets could play a big role in feeding our growing planet, and learn about the science behind sustainable food production. Bring your budding scientists and adventurous eaters and feed your child’s curiosity. Parents need to stay with their children throughout the demonstration. Bookings are essential but you only need to reserve a spot for your child. Tickets are $5 plus booking fee.
Radical reptile show
Presented by Raptor Reptiles, Mona Vale Library will play host to some r-awesome reptiles on Saturday 15 August from 1pm to 2pm. Young nature lovers can get up close to Australia’s amazing reptiles in a hands-on, interactive reptile show. Meet unique animals, discover their important role in our environment, and learn how we can all help protect Australia’s natural world. Please note there will be interactions with live animals and parents and carers must stay with their children for the duration of the session. Book a spot for your child only at a cost of $5 plus booking fee.
Animal migration talk
The Coastal Environment Centre will present an animal migration talk at Mona Vale Library on Thursday 20 August from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. You and your child can find out about the incredible journeys animals make every year. Learn about animal migration on the Northern Beaches, including the annual whale migration. This session includes a 30 minute talk plus a 30 minute fun, animal themed craft activity. Suitable for primary school-aged children. It’s free but you need to book your spot.
STEM discovery
Head to Manly and Dee Why libraries for a fascinating hands-on session exploring the library STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) kit collection. Children can learn how to use the different kits, including Sphero Mini’s, Makey Makey’s, Snap circuits, and Ozobots. At the end of the session, you’ll have the opportunity to borrow any of the available kits. Suitable for primary school-aged children. Free, drop in with a parent or guardian. Catch a session on Monday 17 August 3.30pm to 4.30pm in Manly Library, and on Friday 21 August from 3.30pm to 4.30pm at Dee Why Library. Did you know that children over six years old can borrow a STEM kit at any of the council libraries for up to three weeks?
