Refurb proposes Manly entertainment hub
Northern Beaches councillor Candy Bingham has put the re-adaptation of Manly Town Hall as a multi-performance venue back on the agenda.
Council agreed unanimously on 15 July to a report exploring options for expressions of interest to redevelop the iconic 1930s heritage-listed building for entertainment purposes. The building houses some council services but is no longer required since the amalgamation in 2016.
“It’s the next step to converting this beautiful building and giving it new life,” said Cr Bingham, who has long advocated for the building’s re-use. “The Manly Town Hall provides an opportunity to stage concerts, cabaret, bands, dances, theatre and all kinds of entertainment,” she added.
Council has previously undertaken a feasibility study for a multi-performance and exhibition space, but did not have the money or expertise for the project.
A report will be prepared and presented to council within four months exploring how the redevelopment would benefit council long term, respect the heritage value of the building and ensure the building remained in council ownership – with no cost to council.
“The next step will be that council undertakes an expression of interest process to see if private enterprise would be interested in undertaking the transformation of this iconic building for the purpose of providing a much-needed performance space for Manly and the Northern Beaches,” Cr Bingham said.
“This concept will form part of the entertainment precinct for Manly’s CBD and is supported by Manly Business Chamber,” she added.
Manly MP James Griffin welcomed council’s support for a renewed push for the re-use of Manly Town Hall for entertainment.
“I congratulate all councillors for revisiting this important proposal and for backing a vision that could redefine arts and culture in Manly,” Mr Griffin said. “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to breathe new life into one of our most iconic heritage buildings.
“Naturally, a project of this scale comes with challenges, but with the right partners and a flexible delivery model, we can create something truly unique that honours our heritage and sets Manly apart as a new cultural destination.”
