The Harbour Trust is inviting Sydneysiders to a North Head Sanctuary Discovery Day on Sunday 6 September, a free spring event celebrating this coastal headland where history and nature are deeply intertwined.
“We are inviting the local community to North Head Sanctuary to discover something new about the rich history and the rich natural bushland right on their doorstep,” said Harbour Trust Director Visitor Experience, Kathryn Roberts.
National Heritage Listed, North Head Sanctuary protects 74 hectares of remnant bushland adjoining Sydney Harbour National Park and is home to diverse native flora and fauna. It is also an important remnant military complex that once defended Sydney at a time when there were concerns about Sydney’s vulnerability to potential naval attacks.
A specially curated program for all ages will include guided nature and history tours as well as pickleball, arts & craft fun for kids, birdwatching, sunrise yoga and opportunities to explore historic spaces normally off limits to the public. There will also be food and refreshments, including coffee, snacks and a sausage sizzle!
For curious visitors, our heritage open doors offer a rare chance to step inside North Head’s Second War Battery Observation Post, the historic gun emplacements and the North Fort tunnels usually closed to the public and only available through Harbour Trust guided tours.
Visitors can also spend a leisurely Father’s Day immersed in nature, with birdlife, historic landmarks, walking trails and sweeping harbour views to discover.
On arrival head to The Hub, a pop-up information stall. The main event runs from 10am to 2pm; however, a few early bird activities will run from 7am and 10am. Pre-registration is required for select activities.
