Close to 2,000 students from local High Schools attended the North Shore and Northern Beaches Careers Expo on 15 May at Chatswood High School (CHS). The event wrapped up National Careers Week which celebrated the value of careers education and lifelong learning, and the opportunities for everyone to discover fulfilling pathways.
An initiative of the Educational Pathways Program, which improves education and career outcomes for young people, the event aims to offer industry insights and give attendees an opportunity to chat with experts as students explore the different pathways after school. The event attracted 45 exhibitors from universities, Australian Defence Force, TAFE NSW, Ausgrid and more.
“As a Career Adviser at CHS, I have noticed students asking more specific questions about information they discussed at the expo. This event has prompted a deeper level of career thinking because of the variety of exhibitors that attended,” said Laurina Barbetti, careers adviser at the school.
Students found the expo very informative.
“I came in thinking I knew my options, but the career expo changed that, and now financial advising is on my list too!” said Year 12 student Maggie
“The expo opened my eyes to a variety of new career paths I had not considered,” said Year 11 student Eric.
Matt Dolan, from the Educational Pathways Program, said the event allowed students to ‘project themselves into a potential job or career path.’
“They can take the opportunity to reflect on their journey to get to that point, what kinds of subjects and skills they want to study to get there,” Mr Dolan said.
