Get creative
Why not treat your mum to a workshop and you can both lose yourselves in learning a new skill such as macrame, resin art, weaving, traditional calligraphy, basket and sculpture weaving, meditation, or painting. Little Lane Workshops has been spreading its creative joy for more than 10 years and offers a wide range of art and craft workshops at their studio in Warriewood. Little Lane caters for all ages with open-age workshops at the weekends and classes are suitable for all skills, from absolute beginners up. Enjoy a beachy brunch
The Beaches have some great places where you can enjoy brunch, especially if you’re looking for water views. A Mona Vale gem, Armchair Collective, is just a stone’s throw from Mona Vale beach and offers all day breakfast, lunch and great coffee. There is also a selection of gifts and homewares, so you could do a little shopping while you’re there. You will find indoor and outdoor seating, an extensive menu with something to suit everyone’s taste, and they are licensed too – if you feel like treating mum to a mimosa. Check out our restaurant review in the Think Local section of this magazine – it will make your mouth water.

Barrenjoey Lighthouse walk
Barrenjoey Lighthouse on Barrenjoey Head in Palm Beach offers magnificent views from Sydney’s most northern point. The walk to the top will take about 30 minutes from the Governor Phillip car park – follow the Barrenjoey track. Or to make it more challenging you could walk along Smugglers track which is shorter but steeper. Why not bring a picnic lunch to refuel while you take in the views of the Northern Beaches coastline, over Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, and towards the Central Coast. Whale watching season starts in May so keep an eye out for the magnificent humpbacks. Guided tours are also available most Sundays.

Take a walk on the wild side
Have you ever wondered what life is like as a zoo keeper at Taronga Zoo? Well, now’s your chance to find out. The Keeper for a Day program offers a behind-the-scenes experience where a group of up to six people spend the day with an experienced Taronga keeper visiting areas that are not accessible to the public.
You could be preparing animal diets, creating enrichment and meeting animals up close. Each day varies depending on zoo operations. The program runs on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at $370 per person, including zoo entry, morning tea and a Keeper for a Day t-shirt.
