Bellambi Street Square is to become a permanent space following approval by Willoughby Council at its meeting on 26 April 2023.

In November 2022, the Council trialled the closure of Bellambi St at its intersection with Sailors Bay Road as part of the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces Round 2 Program. The government provided $442,200 in funding under the program with the aim of activating local centres and aiding recovery from the impacts of COVID-19 health orders.

The local community was asked to provide feedback on the square between 6 February and 8 March and the council also held a drop-in session at the Bellambi Street Square on 18 February.

Since November, Bellambi Street Square has had a pop-up bar, food truck, and finska games sessions. “This space has been well-used by local residents, shoppers, and visitors,” said Willoughby Mayor Tanya Taylor.

The council resolved to retain the space after considering a staff report and engagement outcomes report.
