A new 40km/h speed limit comes into effect in parts of Beacon Hill and Frenchs Forest on Friday 3 October 2025, when the 50 km/h signs have been replaced by 40 km/h signs.
The speed reduction will apply to the area west of Beacon Hill Road, from Ryan Place through to Willandra Road and east of Warringah Road, from Bantry Bay Road to Currie Road. Lower speed limits are part of Northern Beaches Council’s Safer Neighbourhoods Program.
The lower speed limits, along with the already installed traffic calming infrastructure, are implemented by the council to address community concerns about speeding, high traffic flows and ‘rat running’ on residential streets.
Following the implementation of traffic calming infrastructure, Transport for NSW has now approved the lowering of speed limits from 50km/h to 40km/h.
Research shows that at a speed of 50km/h, a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian has a 90% risk of causing injury or death. This drops to 40% at 40km/h.
