Ring in spring with music, comedy and performances

The Sydney Fringe Festival has arrived for the very first time on the North Shore and is set to entertain with music, theatre, comedy and dance this September.

The 30-day event is the largest independent arts festival in NSW, and there’s something for everyone. Visitors will see unique performances of every variety, with over 450 events presented in more than 70 venues across Greater Sydney.

Now in its 15th year, the festival will continue to amaze attendees with its open-access structure: any artist who wants to present something can join in the festivities, making the program a complete surprise!

Acclaimed producer, trumpeter and composer Tom Avgenicos will participate in the Sydney Fringe Festival, performing two shows in North Sydney on 22 September.

“I will be presenting a genre-bending, multi-arts piece called Ghosts Between Streams, blending chamber music, jazz and electronic soundscapes with break dancing and contemporary dance. Ghosts Between Streams premiered in 2023 and this will be just the third time this work will be performed,” Tom explains.

The musician says the piece was inspired by his daily walks through Stringybark Creek, Lane Cove and ‘explores the relationship between nature and urbanisation in our community identity.’

“This will be a very special and immersive performance as we will be taking over the Torpedo Factory car park at Sub Base Platypus,” Tom says.

“Apart from the extraordinary and unique performance space, what makes this event extra special is it’s the first time a Fringe event will be held on the Lower North Shore. I hope lots of locals can come along as it will encourage artists and the festival to hold more events on the North Shore in the future.

“The majority of the festival is held in the Inner-West and the city, so it’s an opportunity for the North Shore to form an important role in facilitating the arts in this vibrant city.”

Tom has assembled a list of cutting-edge creatives for this special Sydney Fringe Festival performance, including string quartet Ensemble Apex, Delay 45, breaker Gerard ‘Kid Tek’ Cabellon and Japanese-Australian dancer Reina Takeuchi.

The performers will turn the Torpedo Factory car park into a dynamic tapestry of sound and movement. Tom says the show promises to be a unique and unforgettable experience, taking the audiences ‘on an explosive journey brimming with emotional power and resonance’, reminding them ‘that our shared spaces are something to be cared for, nurtured and enjoyed by all.’

Come along to the Sydney Fringe Festival and enjoy a month of eclectic performances.
