The Better Cities Initiative (BCI) is hosting a free public forum, ‘What’s Next for the Northern Beaches’, to explore how a citizen-led approach to housing, planning and development can create a more liveable, sustainable and equitable Northern Beaches, Sydney – and beyond.
The BCI is a not-for-profit aiming to sidestep the politics of planning and combat the crises of housing, climate and democracy.
Dr Elizabeth Farrelly, founder and CEO of the BCI, said:
“A better future is possible. One where our cities are shaped by the people who live in them, not by short-term politics.
“It’s clear that our cities must densify to stop sprawl, improve sustainability and liveability, and enhance affordability. But how do we balance this need with the pressures of coastal tourism, protecting local ecosystems, increasing tree canopy, and supporting healthy lifestyles?” Ms Farrelly said.
“Our public forums are framed to test public support for citizen-first approaches as a path to productive consensus on creating better neighbourhoods and cities. They also come at a critical time when regions across Sydney are facing pressure to hit NSW Government housing targets.”
The forum has no agenda, and everyone is welcome to discuss these issues and how best to find solutions.
Journalist and radio host Wendy Harmer is the forum moderator, and guest speakers include Independent Pittwater MP Jacqui Scruby, coastal engineer for former Pittwater Council CEO Angus Gordon, Planning and Better Streets advocate Michelle Washington and Tawny Frogmouth founder Liam Carroll.
Join the discussions on Wednesday, 26 February, 6-8pm at Mona Vale Memorial Hall. Get your free ticket here.
