Northern Beaches Council has closed the iconic Palm Beach rockpool until Friday for ‘urgent repairs.’
The pool, which has been open since the 1920s, is one of the oldest on the Northern Beaches. According to a council announcement, the repairs will replace a broken valve that allows the pool to be opened and closed for weekly cleaning.
According to council, “The current valve is at risk of not being able to be kept closed so a new stainless-steel version, which promises a longer lifespan, will be installed.” Work will also be carried out on the pool floor, addressing several leaks that have caused water to spill out, forcing several closures last year.
Council also highlighted that the 15 rockpools across the Northern Beaches range from 50 to 100 years old, meaning decades of exposure to the elements have led to some segregation. Despite this, the council reaffirmed its commitment to keeping them functional: “Council is committed to maintaining and improving its recreational facilities to provide the long-term functionality, safety, and best possible experience for residents and visitors.”
The pool will be reopened this Friday 11 April bending weather and swell.
