The Balmoral Burn tests the bravest of us, and at 81, John Simmonds can’t wait to take it on

The Humpty Dumpty Balmoral Burn is returning in May, and there’s one participant taking on the challenge of racing up Mosman’s infamous 420-metre Awaba Street incline for the 14th time – 81 year old John Simmonds.

A seasoned veteran of the charity race, John says he has a special method for tackling the hill. “There’s only one way I can do it, and that’s to look down, pretend it’s flat and keep going!” he explains. “Although, to be fair, once I get to the top I start to look up.”

Registrations are now open for the Balmoral Burn, which will take place on Sunday 25 May.

Since 2001 the charity race has raised over $35 million for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation, which provides 500 pieces of lifesaving medical equipment to paediatric wards, neonatal units and maternity and emergency departments across Australia annually, increasing positive health outcomes for sick babies and children.

Phil Kearns, a former Wallabies player, started the Balmoral Burn fundraising event as a way of giving back after one of his children received life-saving medical care thanks to medical equipment supplied to the hospital by Humpty Dumpty.

A Mosman resident, John is a keen runner and has participated in seven marathons along with numerous half- marathons, park runs and other events. He’s a member of many local clubs, including the Balmoral Beach Club, Balmoral Triathlon Club and the Sydney Striders, which keeps him fit for this great community event.

John admits he’ll tackle the hill ‘probably two or three times in the week beforehand.’ “Just finishing is the achievement,” John says. “I accept that from one year to the other, I’m getting slower. The fact I can do it is an achievement!”

There are 20 different races to register for and there’s something for everyone – from families and first-timers, to elite athletes and even four-legged friends. Participants can run or walk solo or alongside their school, sports group or workplace. The atmosphere on the day is ‘incredible,’ John says.

With Australia’s only inflatable baby suit race – Run Baby Run – returning this year, there will be lots of action too. Tim Akers made history in 2023 as the first-ever participant in an inflatable baby suit to honour his son Archie, who was born three months early at 900 grams and spent 12 weeks in a neonatal care unit using equipment donated by Humpty Dumpty.

There’s plenty to see and do at the event, and everyone is invited to cheer on from the sidelines. Food and entertainment will also be available, and participants often dress up in a flurry of colour and fun.

Register now to join in the fun and tackle one of Sydney’s steepest hills. As John says: “You can it do!”
