The whole family will enjoy this annual Mosman event
From its humble Balmoral beginnings in 2018, a pop-up event called ‘Rethink Rubbish’ has morphed into the annual Seaside Scavenge and Sustainability Fair, which will be held on 22 September.
Locals will gather for a day of coastal fun, with plenty of diverse activities on offer for all ages, including stalls and activities hosted by local environmentally-focused businesses and groups. The aim is to encourage sustainability, reusing and waste reduction.
Loani Tierney, event organiser and council officer, expects the Bike ‘n’ Blend free pedal-powered smoothies activity to be very popular, where you can watch a delicious smoothie appear before your eyes as you pedal a bike.
Revolve Recycling will be on hand to offer a free bike service. Bring along your bike and a specialist will guide you through the basics, from breaks to bells, to ensure your bike is in good shape. You can book your bike session through Mosman Council’s events website.
Anyone who has a bike they no longer need can also donate bicycles at the event.
Last year, about 95 people took part in a beach clean-up. Almost 3,457 items of rubbish were collected and exchanged for shopping tokens to use at the fair’s secondhand pop-up stall.
As a result, preloved toys, clothes, accessories and books prevented 43 kilograms of material from entering landfills.
“The pop-up market is always a hit,” Loani says. “Especially with our young helpers who love to get in and join the beach clean-up.
“The Ocean Action Pod is also expected to attract plenty of interest,” she says. It’s a mobile exhibition with props and educational activities creating awareness about action for oceans.
The interactive pod is colourful and sure to engage the family, especially children.
Grab an upcycled bag from Mooch Denim. They transform unwanted denim and remnants into modern, custom bags in a bid to save fabric from landfills.
Wildlife advocate Wildcard Sue will showcase the importance of marine biodiversity, using her art to raise awareness of lesser-known and appreciated marine animals. As a scuba diver, Sue draws from her personal experiences and interactions with marine animals.
Nonprofit Zero Emissions Solutions will offer plenty of good advice on electrifying your home by going solar. Good For the Hood will offer help on the issues of circular economy food waste and advise on what communities can do to make positive environmental and social change.
There will be some live acoustic music entertainment, along with short informative talks advocating for sustainability, with an Auslan Stage Left interpreter to help ensure the fair is inclusive for everyone in the community.
