Take your pick from the events planned on the Beaches to help celebrate women and progress change
This 8 March marks International Women’s Day (IWD), which is celebrated internationally in an effort to not only honour and celebrate the achievements of women, but to take action on issues which affect them.
This year’s theme is ‘Accelerate Action,’ which calls for society to take fast and decisive steps to achieve gender equality. Data from the World Economic Forum shows that it will take roughly five generations from now to reach full gender parity, across wages, workplace participation and other areas of imbalance in the professional and personal spheres.
NSW Women’s Week, from 2 to 8 March, is an annual showcase of the stories and achievements of women in our state. Minister for Women Jodie Harrison says: “NSW Women’s Week gives women a platform to honour the many contributions to our families and communities in all aspects of social, cultural and political life.”
Northern Beaches Council has organised several events to mark IWD, including an IWD breakfast in Manly and markets in Dee Why, while the Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter will also host a breakfast.
Mayor Sue Heins says the IWD events are a time for recognition and offers a chance to forge a commitment to change.
“It is an opportunity to get together and honour the strength, resilience and contributions of local women who make a difference every day,” Mayor Heins says.
“The (council) breakfast event, which has been running for many years, is more than just a gathering – it’s a moment to bring women together, inspire one another and reaffirm our commitment to equality and empowerment.
“Together we can continue to build a future where every woman’s potential is realised.”
