Willoughby City Council is alerting community members about the illegal dumping of vegetation on the streets.
Council posted on Facebook that in the past six months there had been an escalation of illegal garden vegetation dumping in Chatswood streets.
“Usually it happens around midnight (with items) dumped in the middle of a suburban street. This is a safety issue for other drivers and costs ratepayers to clean up,” the post reads.
It is illegal to leave any unwanted waste such as rubbish, furniture, electrical goods, mattresses and garden waste on public and private land, including nature strips and kerbsides, council says.
Anyone caught dumping can be fined $4,000 on the spot.
Residents are advised that materials such as waste or unwanted items can only be left on the kerbside or nature strip if they have scheduled or pre-booked a clean-up collection.
Materials may only be placed out on the kerbside from the Sunday night before the scheduled collection week. Any materials left outside of this time are considered illegal dumps and will be treated as such.
Council is asking community members to report or help with information to council calling 9777 1000 or email@willoughby.nsw.gov.au
