Victoria Avenue, Chatswood will be transformed into a vibrant celebration of Hong Kong culture, food and entrepreneurship when the OzStarter HongKongers Street Market returns on Sunday, 20 September.
Now in its third year, the annual community event has become one of Sydney’s most anticipated Hong Kong cultural festivals, attracting more than 21,000 visitors last year. Organisers expect this year’s event to be even bigger, with more stalls, entertainment and an expanded cultural program.
In addition, this year will once again feature the Hong Kong Nostalgic Double-Decker Bus Tour. Hop aboard a classic 1980s ‘Hot Dog’ bus and travel through Chatswood and North Sydney, enjoying a unique experience.
This year’s theme, ‘Streets Stories: Hong Kong & Australia,’ is inspired by the surprising historical connection between Hong Kong and Australia. Many streets familiar to Sydneysiders share the same names as streets in Hong Kong, such as Wellington Street, Stanley Street, Boundary Street, Pitt Street and others.
While separated by thousands of kilometres, these shared street names reflect historical links dating back to the British colonial era. OzStarter hopes to use this year’s theme to reconnect Hong Kong migrants with familiar memories while introducing the wider Australian community to the stories, history and culture behind Hong Kong’s iconic streets.
Visitors will find themed precincts throughout the market, recreating the atmosphere of Hong Kong neighbourhoods, including: Ladies’ Street featuring fashion, accessories and lifestyle products; Tai Nan Street showcasing Hong Kong originated local artists and entrepreneurs, showcasing their handmade products, design brands and creative businesses; and Food Street offering authentic Hong Kong street food and local favourites.
