Northern Beaches council has endorsed a strategy plan to help manage the sand build up and risk of flooding at the Narrabeen lagoon entrance.
It is understood the management strategy plan which looks at short, medium and long-term solutions was the result of extensive analysis and review of options by coastal experts and included several phases of community consultation.
The current strategy will include trialling more frequent but smaller sand clearance operations every two to three years while also developing a more flexible set of conditions which trigger council intervention to open the lagoon if required.
It is understood the strategy will also look at adjusting the alignment for the pilot channel while reshaping and revegetating and stabilising the denuded part of Birdwood park dune as well as investigate the financial viability of mobile sand pumping.
Mayor Michael Regan said managing the lagoon entrance has been complex and unfortunately will not be a one quick fix to stop the flood risk.
“It’s important to now have a formal strategy in place to guide our activities and have a forward plan for the more significant medium to longer term actions,” Mr Regan said.
