After more than 48 years as the home of squash and indoor racquet sports on Sydney’s North Shore, Willoughby Squash has closed its doors for the final time.

The club, featuring 10 courts – including the only full-size doubles squash courts anywhere in Sydney – has served and been loved by countless indoor racquet sports players over nearly half a century. A Development Application for a new childcare centre was approved in late 2025 to turn Willoughby Squash Club into a luxury childcare centre.

Hundreds of club members gathered on one of the only two doubles squash courts in Sydney last weekend to farewell the 10 indoor squash courts, the largest, most significant squash centre anywhere on the North Shore, before playing a final tournament.

Willoughby City Council Mayor Tanya Taylor was in attendance on the day, along with Cr Robert Samuels and Cr Sarah Royds. At the ceremony Mayor Taylor said: “One door closes and another door opens. And that’s certainly what myself and my fellow councillors are here to show our support. We are definitely on the lookout, to begin with, for some temporary facilities for you, as soon as possible.”

Local community action group, Keep Squash in Willoughby has been working for more than two years to show how important indoor racquet sports are to the community and to have them treated fairly and equally, alongside all other sports that exist on council-owned land. More than 2,800 locals have signed a petition that has resulted in Willoughby Council unanimously passing two resolutions committing it to finding a permanent home for squash and all other indoor racquet sports.

The event featured 1,000 squash racquets to show the breadth and depth of support by the entire squash loving community on the North Shore.
