For 40 years the Brookvale Ladies Probus Club has been a place for retirees and community members to come together, socialise and keep their minds active.

The club is set to mark the birthday milestone on 23 September with a special lunch for its 30 members. Secretary Dianne Hynes has been part of the group for more than 10 years. “Probus was started by Rotary,” she says, adding that the name is a combination of ‘professional’ and ‘business.’ “The idea is to keep retirees active and engaged.”

The group range in age from 70 to 96, and meet on the second Tuesday of the month at Manly Leagues Club at 10am. Following the regular meeting, the group listen to guest speakers talking on interesting topics. More recently Andrew Rogers spoke to the group about his adventures going in a submarine to view the Titanic; while Geraldine O’Neill, a doctor, spoke of the advances being made in children’s cancer.

Outside of meetings, the group go on social walks and meet for coffee and lunches. “I just love the comradery,” Dianne says, adding it keeps her in touch with the local community.
