This year’s International Women’s Day will be celebrated in style on the Beaches

Mothers, sisters, daughters, friends, political leaders, role models and women everywhere will be celebrated on 8 March, International Women’s Day (IWD).

Under the theme of #InspireInclusion, Northern Beaches Council will host two events to acknowledge amazing women in the local community, an IWD market on 3 March and an IWD breakfast on 8 March.

Mayor Sue Heins says the day serves as an important platform to acknowledge the contributions of women striving to improve their communities.

“As a council, we continue to foster inclusivity and equality wherever and whenever possible. The council currently consists of nine female and six male councillors. Women comprise 53 per cent of council’s workforce, and 51 per cent of our staff leadership team are women,” Mayor Heins said.

“We continue to enthusiastically support IWD with our popular breakfast event and market, which will showcase the skills and talent of our local creative women.”

Renowned athlete, local Chloe Dalton, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s breakfast.

Athlete Chloe Dalton will be the breakfast keynote speaker

Chloe is a multi-sport athlete, Olympic gold medalist, current AFLW player, founder of the [female] athlete project and an author. “I’m incredibly passionate about advocating for women, especially female athletes,” says Chloe.

“I love being able to share their challenges and triumphs through speaking events such as this and the [female] athlete project. In the sports media arena, female athletes receive only four per cent of the coverage compared to their male counterparts, yet women make up to 40 per cent of the participants.

“IWD is a pivotal moment to create conversation about women reshaping their environments, embracing change and driving towards a gender-equal future.”

The breakfast will be held on 8 March, from 7am to 9am at Manly Pacific Sydney, MGallery Collection.

The IWD markets on 3 March will be held from 8am to 2pm at James Meehan Reserve. The markets will celebrate local women as they showcase art, craft, jewellery, accessories and clothing they have personally made, designed or created.

On 6 March, Zonta Club Northern Beaches will host an IWD breakfast at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club.

Then the Manly Business Chamber will hold a gathering at the Manly Pavilion from 6.30pm to 9.30pm on 8 March in support of the Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter (NBWS). Speakers include Kim Smee, owner and editor of the Manly Observer and Marilyn Annecchini, co-owner of Pilu at Freshwater. The NBWS will be supported through a silent auction and raffle. The organisation, running since 2010, has opened its doors to over 590 homeless women and children across the Beaches. To book, visit manly.org.au

The same day, from 6.30pm to 10pm, Manly Women’s Wellness, Siber Dress and Hotel Steyne will host a Manly Fashion Show at Hotel Steyne Rooftop.
