This weekend marked the commencement of the 2026-27 beach patrol season, with the red and yellow flags re-making their mark in the sand.
Sydney is anticipating a hotter than average summer, with plenty of beachgoers heading into the season. In a statement, the NSW Government said that there have already been a few drownings over the last few weeks and urged swimmers to stay between the flags.
The Northern Beaches will see beach patrol at Shelly Beach for the first time during the busiest period of the year from 21 December to 31 January. Northern Beaches Council said this was made possible through the special variation to rates.
Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steve Pearce emphasised the expected summer conditions increasing demand on volunteer patrols and rescue services, alongside the potential for heightened shark activity.
“This summer is expected to be one of the most challenging patrol seasons in recent years,” Mr Pearce said.
“Surf lifesavers across the state stand ready to keep our communities safe. Our message is simple: swim at a patrolled beach, swim between the red and yellow flags, and listen to the advice of lifesavers.”
