Join in the vibrant fun this Youth Week

Young people on the North Shore are invited to a free Colour Fest event this Youth Week sure to be packed with fun, colour and entertainment. On 18 April, North Sydney will play host to the celebration, which is open to young people and their families.

There they can join in a colour run with an obstacle course, where participants will be dusted in coloured powder as they make their way around St Leonards Park. There’s a relay run championship for high school students too – they just need to make a team and register for the event.

Prizes for the relay winners will be on offer, and the tunes from a DJ, food and refreshments will make for a memorable afternoon.

This will be the fourth year that Colour Fest has been held, and it’s a joint effort from a number of councils, including North Sydney and Mosman Council.

NSW Youth Week, which runs from 16 to 26 April, is an opportunity for people aged between 12 and 24 to come together in their local communities. The theme this year, ‘Dream. Dare. Do,’ encourages creativity and courage, inspiring young people to dream big and take steps to make their dreams happen.

Mischa Rado, acting youth service coordinator with North Sydney Council says the event is a highlight on the calendar each year, referring to it as ‘our big Christmas.’ Mischa works at Planet X, a youth drop-in centre in St Leonards.

“(Young people) are really the showcase of the event,” he says. “A lot of youth spaces or areas have been taken away from young people, so it’s great to have something that is dedicated to them.” There will also be a number of youth services, such as Headspace and StreetWork present on the day, which Mischa says is ‘a great way to show young people the services in the community that are there for them.’

Mischa says planning for Colour Fest started in November last year. “It’s going to have a real community vibe. It’s great that we can put it all together so it’s free for young people and their families.”
