Westfield Warringah Mall has had a coastal-themed birthday bash to celebrate its 60 anniversary.

The much-loved centre opened its doors on 4 April 1963 as one of the largest shopping centres in Australia, second only to Chadstone Shopping Centre in Victoria. The mall opened with 50 retailers, including a few supermarkets and department stores.

Since its inauguration, the centre has played host to numerous events that have come to form an integral part of both its own history and that of the wider community. These events have helped to shape the identity of the place and foster a sense of belonging among its residents.

One of those events was the installation of the iconic Dolphin Fountain. The fountain was unveiled in 1988 and commissioned by the Warringah Shire Council as a bicentennial legacy for the people of Warringah.

Will Farenden, Westfield Warringah Mall centre manager said: “We’re proud to be celebrating 60 years of Westfield Warringah Mall and how both the centre and the community have changed over time.”

“Since the mall opened, the community has been at its heart, both as a retail destination and social hub for locals to enjoy.”

As part of the celebrations, Westfield compiled a photo exhibition, which showcased memories of the centre’s history and evolution over the past six decades.
