Northern beaches teal group launches search for independent state MP

A group of Northern Beaches residents, called Wakehurst’s Independent, recently launched a campaign to find an independent community candidate to be the voice of Wakehurst in the upcoming NSW state elections in March 2023.

The Wakehurst electorate runs from Killarney Heights to Dee Why and Manly Dam and up to Collaroy.

Many of Wakehurst’s Independent founding members were volunteers for the Sophie Scamps or Zali Stegall federal campaigns and the team all share the common goal of an independent voice in parliament.

Wakehurst’s Independent spokesperson, Sarah Baker, said that with Jonathan O’Dea recently resigning and rumours Brad Hazzard will soon resign, they are calling on potential candidates to represent the community in state parliament.

“As a safe Liberal seat up until now, we’ve seen again and again how our community has been taken for granted. The Planning Minister, Anthony Roberts, didn’t even bother to consult with our local MP, Brad Hazzard, despite being in the same party, prior to a planning approval which is likely to result in development in sensitive local bushland areas,” said Sarah Baker.

“The time is right to launch a search for someone aligned to our community’s values, who wants to represent Wakehurst’s unique issues in state parliament.

“Whether its schools or roads, housing or health, climate or environment, the crucial decisions that are made in the NSW Parliament, are what will define the quality of our lives in the mid to long term.”

The group is currently surveying the community to understand which issues are most important to them. Previous research by Voices of Mackellar, indicates climate, integrity, and health are likely to be some of the key issues. The group is holding an event on October 5 where The Hon. Justin Robert Field MLC will be speaking about independent representation in NSW State Parliament.
