Independent Pittwater MP Jacqui Scruby has voiced in-principle support for new legislation targeting illegal vape and tobacco sales in NSW. While the Opposition’s Bill has yet to be released, Ms Scruby said she supports the intent, citing the need for stronger enforcement to protect young people and uphold community safety.

“In Pittwater, we’ve seen vape shops opening within metres of schools and playgrounds… Illegal tobacco and vapes aren’t a grey area. They’re part of an underground trade,” she said. “We’re cracking down harder on food safety than we are on illegal tobacco and vapes.”

The proposed legislation is expected to include powers to shut down non-compliant retailers, evict tenants, and increase penalties. Ms Scruby called for additional measures such as zoning restrictions near schools, mandatory licensing, dedicated enforcement officers, youth education programs, and public reporting.

“This is about community safety and criminal accountability,” she added. “The intention of this bill looks to be a step in the right direction.”
