Pedestrian countdown timers are being installed in Manly Corso at the busy Darley Road intersection to improve the safety in the area.
Manly MP James Griffin has welcomed the move, as night works on the upgrades began on 12 April. “I have been advocating for this pedestrian safety feature, especially on The Corso, which carries large volumes of pedestrian traffic to and from Manly Wharf,” Mr Griffin said. “On most days, thousands of people would cross this prominent Manly intersection and any work which makes it safer for both motorists and pedestrians is most welcome.”
To help minimise disruption, the upgrading work will be undertaken at night with up to 19 shifts until Friday, 26 June, weather and site conditions permitting.
Mr Griffin says the works will include upgrading the traffic signal lights to display pedestrian countdown timers, and installing new traffic signal posts. There will be cutting into the road and footpath to upgrade traffic signal cables, and excavated surfaces will be restored after each shift.
He advised that kerb ramps will also be widened to improve access, and sections of the road asphalt and line marking at the intersection will be renewed. Excavated surfaces will be permanently restored after all work is completed.
Mr Griffin also advised that access to properties in and near the work will be maintained. “Both Darley Road and The Corso will also remain open to traffic although there will be lane closures in place,” Mr Griffin said. “I appeal to motorists to keep to the speed limit and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signage.”
