Beaches mayor announces as Independent candidate

Mayor of the Northern Beaches, Michael Regan, is standing as an Independent candidate for the state seat of Wakehurst at the upcoming election on 25 March.

He says there are big challenges facing the Wakehurst community that require State Government input and he wants to be part of the solutions.

“We need affordable housing options for everyone from downsizers to first home buyers and of course housing for our essential workers,” he tells Peninsula Living.

“I support smarter planning that will give us the urban centres we deserve at Frenchs Forest and Brookvale – it just needs the right infrastructure.

“We need sensible measures to lower our power bills and protect our homes and natural environment from over-development and the impacts of climate change.

“I will deliver real plans to fix our traffic bottlenecks and improve our public transport.”

Mr Regan says the recent State Government decision to develop an area of Belrose known locally as ‘Lizard Rock’ was a big part of his decision to stand.

“The Northern Beaches’ community is often taken for granted by both major political parties. The massive over-development of the Lizard Rock area is just the latest example of that.

“The Liberals want to clear over 45 footy fields of bushland and put more than 400 homes in a bushfire zone.

“Meanwhile, Labor wants the northern suburbs to take increased development.

“It’s a disgrace and proof that the two party system does not serve our community.”

The current mayor says his decades of experience working in business and in local government will be an asset in NSW Parliament.

“I have served our community for 14 years as mayor and I’m passionate about ensuring our voice is heard at a state level.

“I have the experience, the relationships and the local knowledge to get things done.”

Mr Regan confirmed he would resign from his role as mayor if elected in March.

“Being the mayor is a tremendous honour, but if fortunate enough to be elected to State Parliament, I would of course step down from that role.”
