With the entire state entering the Bush Fire Danger Period on 1 October and 38 local government areas already in effect, residents are urged to prepare for the upcoming fire season.
This Get Ready Weekend -from 16-17 September- the NSW Rural Fire Service and local brigades will run several events across the Northern Beaches to provide helpful advice and tips on keeping your property safe.
These events will allow residents to engage with local firefighters, witness fireworks displays, and explore specialised equipment.
To invite locals to take action, the community is urged to take five simple steps to reduce their bushfire risk:
- Trim overhanging trees and shrubs.
- Mow grass and remove the cuttings.
- Remove material that can burn around your home, such as door mats, wood piles and mulch.
- Clear and remove all the debris and leaves from the gutters surrounding your home.
- Prepare a sturdy hose or hoses that will reach all around your home.
It is also essential to start the conversation at home. You can use the myfireplan.com.au to guide your discussion.
It is also a good idea to keep all the bush fire information numbers and websites and to download the ‘Hazards near me’ app.
