Elliot Powel, a year 11 student at Oxford Falls Grammar School has won the Al Worden ’Endeavour’ Scholarship affiliated with NASA.
Elliott is one of only four young Australians chosen for the 2023 scholarship and will be heading off to Alabama this July to attend the US Space and Rocket Centre’s Space Camp.
The scholarship is a nation-to-nation initiative aimed at encouraging young people to pursue careers in engineering and space exploration.
Entrants must complete a challenging mission to win the scholarship.
“It’s the year 2050, and there is a mission to Saturn. You must ensure that 35 people sustain life on a 3-year journey to Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. In a three-minute video and one-page summary, create a system to address one of the following conditions for the crew: water/food, life support, propulsion, or solar radiation.”
The judges were impressed with Elliott’s ingenuity and effectiveness in his entry, which earned him the coveted scholarship.
