Northern Beaches Hospital (NBH) staff continue to perform high as its emergency department was ranked first in its peer group for treating patients on time in the July to September financial report.

Working well above the average for hospitals of similar size in NSW, NBH Chief Executive Officer Andrew Newton said staff had worked hard to ensure that 78.8 per cent of emergency patients were treated on time.

“Throughout this quarter there were 16,193 attendances at the Northern Beaches Hospital emergency department – an average of 176 per day – so it’s a tribute to our fantastic staff that 78.8 per cent of emergency patients were treated on time,” said Mr Newton.

“The majority of emergency department patients started their treatment on time – 75 per cent for semi-urgent patients and 93 per cent for non-urgent cases.”

“We are currently the third busiest emergency department in our peer group so it is pleasing to see we are treating most patients within the recommended time frames.”

It is understood NBH was also the highest performing hospital in its peer group for the transferral of patients arriving by ambulance into hospital.

According to the quarterly report, NBH provided 7,025 episodes of care and performed 873 public elective surgery procedures from July to September – an increase of 22 per cent and all urgent elective surgeries (100 per cent) were performed on time during the quarter.
