Cricket NSW backs the Bears

Cricket NSW has joined forces with North Sydney Council and the North Sydney Bears to push for a revamp of North Sydney Oval.

In January, the state’s cricket association announced a host of priority infrastructure and community projects it would seek political support for ahead of the NSW State Election in March.

The ‘wish list’ featured five major infrastructure projects, including an $11 million upgrade of North Sydney Oval.

Cricket NSW says the improvements to the ground – known as the ‘home of women’s cricket’ – are necessary to continue the expansion of women’s sport locally, with the northern suburbs one of the fastest growing regions in Australia for girls’ participation in cricket.

“With this in mind, North Sydney Council and Cricket NSW have developed a joint proposal to protect the oval’s heritage and character, while cementing its future – with a modest investment to ensure the ground is a fitting venue to stage elite women’s sport in the 21st century,” the association said in a statement.

Cricket NSW says the investment would also support the hosting of AFLW and Women’s Rugby League matches at the oval, together with boosting the North Sydney Bears’ long-time bid to return to the NRL.

“This proposed investment would not only support the growth of women’s sport at the venue, but would also allow the North Sydney Bears a viable home venue for their respective NRL and NRLW licence bids.”

The proposed improvements would include increased food and beverage facilities; accessibility improvements; a refurbishment of all public toilets; the re-leveling of the playing surface; and upgrades to the media/broadcasting and community areas.

The timber bench spectator seating would also be replaced with individual seats, to improve fan comfort.

The proposal has been supported with a $2.5 million investment from North Sydney Council, $100,000 from Cricket NSW, $100,000 from North Sydney Bears, $50,000 from the AFL and $20,000 from Northern Suburbs Rugby.
