One month after the Federal Election, Independent Nicolette Boele has ‘provisionally’ won the seat of Bradfield, beating main rival Liberal Gisele Kapterian by just 26 votes.

In the original count, after preferences were distributed, the candidates were separated by just eight votes and a recount was automatically triggered as the margin was less than 100 votes. The recount took just over a week, with the lead changing several times. But in the end, Ms Boele, who was supported by environment-focused crowdfunding group Climate 200, pulled through. It is the first time in 75 years that the Liberals have not won the seat, with former Liberal Government minister Paul Fletcher retiring before the election.

Ms Boele said she was ‘honoured’ to be provisionally elected. “We have chosen a new path – one that puts people above parties.

“I do not take this responsibility lightly. As Bradfield’s first Independent member of Parliament, I will be dedicated to serving this community with integrity, courage and care.

“I also want to acknowledge Gisele Kapterian for the civility she’s shown as a candidate during this close contest.”

Ms Kapterian, who was originally ahead in the original count, said she would ‘carefully review’ the two counts.

“I’m so grateful for the efforts of the many who have taken us this far. I have witnessed the same dedication from Nicolette and her team.” Ms Kapterian said. It is believed the Liberal Party is considering its options for a legal challenge in the Court of Disputed Returns.
