Disney’s Camp Rock is coming to Chatswood
Ingrid Bass, founder of the Umbrella School of Music, believes that everyone should have the opportunity to express themselves through music. She is now thrilled that Disney has approved a one-act production of Camp Rock for three shows between 25 and 29 March, 2025 at The Zenith Theatre in Chatswood.
Ingrid wants to show how capable people with disabilities are in the performing arts and how experiencing a show with a diverse cast can result in amazing theatre and also create a more kind, understanding and compassionate community.
Each role in Camp Rock will have two people, one with disability and the other without disability, who will share costumes, lines, solos and parts.
To date, over 40 people aged seven to 57 have expressed interest in the workshop and in being involved in the musical. However, most of these people have a disability, and Ingrid needs buddies without a disability for these people.
“Every performance will be followed by a sing-along,” Ingrid says. “The whole thing will be inclusive and aims to break down those barriers about disability.”
Ingrid has $10,000 in the kitty to run the musical ($7,000 from Willoughby Council). Because she was unsuccessful in attaining a Create NSW grant, she needs to raise another $12,200 by 23 June, when she hosts her pilot workshop where participants can meet the production team and learn to sing, dance and act parts from the musical.
“The funds will mainly cover staff costs, required insurances, Disney rights and royalties, and re-hearsal venue and theatre hire.
“We can offset some expenses with a production and rehearsal fee,” says Ingrid. “But it never covers everything. The head mics alone are $300 per person. I’ve only asked for 20, and I really might need 30.”
Ingrid is very passionate about Camp Rock
Ingrid is calling out for sponsorship to raise money by 23 June. “More so local businesses such as banks, real estate agents, car dealers, and retailers that can sponsor us.”
Any donations of $500 or more will be acknowledged on the school’s social media channels, website and programs.
Ingrid is giving the project everything and she’s losing sleep.
“I know that sounds ridiculous, but I want this so much for the whole community,” she says. “I’m busting my guts to keep spreading the word to try and raise funds. We are really hoping to raise this money in time so we can start rehearsals on 11 August 11 and not disappoint those interested.”
