All the magic of Wicked is back on stage, with an all-Australian cast in this dazzling production now showing at the Sydney Lyric Theatre.

Broadway hit Wicked has been around for almost 20 years and shown in Australia twice. But while familiar with some of the beautiful ballads, I have never had the opportunity to view it. So it was with great excitement I got to see Wicked at the Lyric. And it did not disappoint. From the roaring dragon which overlooks the stage, to flying monkeys and Glinda’s bubble – the show is a visual spectacular.

It is based on Gregory Macguire’s ‘backstory’ of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda, from the original Wizard of Oz movie. Elphaba, with her brilliant green hued-skin, and blonde, popular ‘Galinda’ are witches in training and roomates at Shiz University in Oz. The contrasting pair are arch enemies, but in time become best friends – and both fall in love with the handsome ‘Winky Prince’ Fiyero.

The girls have some great duos, memorable ballads which have become classics, like Defying Gravity and One Short Day. Stephen Schwartz’s songbook is one of the reasons Wicked has gained a cult following around the globe, earning 100 theatre awards, including a Grammy and three Tonys.

At times the show is light-hearted, with a fabulously comedic routine by Courtney Monsma as Glinda while she attempts to ‘beautify’ Elphaba in Popular. But as Elphaba’s attempts at acceptance decline, Sheridan Adams puts on a powerful performance in her transformation, with delicate songs like I’m not that girl deteriorating in mood as Elphaba is hunted by the citizens of Oz as ‘wicked’.

It really is a story about difference, and being misunderstood. Is Elphaba truly wicked as she is portrayed? She has such love for Fiyero, as evidenced in their touching duet, As long as you’re mine.

There are definitely many surprises in this show, and the Tinman, Scarecrow and Lion all make an appearance – with an ending which will make you gasp!

Wicked is proving to be a popular show at the Sydney Lyric Theatre, with best ticket availability in November. So book now!
