Beloved Northern Beaches legend Jack ‘Johnny’ Carter’s ashes have been returned to his Palm Beach home this summer.

John Edward Carter passed away on 10 May 2021 while living in Lake Macquarie. Renowned for teaching generations how to swim, Mr Carted started his legacy in Palm Beach in 1946 at age 17, when got there to fulfil a role as a Beach Inspector.

Jack return to his Palm Beach home was planned long ago, but due to COVID restrictions, the date was moved to this year to allow everyone who wished to attend to be present.

The ceremony was held on Sunday 26 February 2023, with a paddle out by Palm Beach SLSC. The event was preceded by the annual Jack Carter Cup, competition named after him from being an admired Life Member of the surf club.

The ‘Palm Beach legend’ will be always remembered for teaching over 10,000 kids how to swim for 70 years, making no difference between the rich and famous, the disadvantaged or the disabled.
