Crows Nest welcomes more open space and pedestrian links
The first stage of the $3.5 million Hume Street Park expansion has officially been completed, with more public open space now available in Crows Nest.
Hume Street Park is one of 21 projects being delivered or finished under the NSW Government’s $85 million Precinct Support Scheme, and is part of the Sydney Metro development.
Member for North Shore Felicity Wilson, who has strongly advocated for this new park, said this new plaza provides much-needed open space for the local community and improved pedestrian connectivity to the heart of Crows Nest.
When the new Metro station opens in 2024, North Sydney Council says modelling incidates that around 10,000 people are expected to pass through between the station and the village.
“The pedestrian link will form part of a crucial connection from the village to the new Crows Nest Metro station and is an example of how public spaces can be revitalised and reinvigorated for the community while protecting and enhancing the unique character of this much-loved village,” Ms Wilson said.
“We are committed to investing in as much open space for locals as possible, while also improving transport and pedestrian connections for residents, workers and visitors.”
Minister for Planning and Homes, Anthony Roberts, said that the park now ‘boasts a new green plaza, shaded terraces for outdoor dining, gardens, and pathways’.
“There’s also a new connection from the park to shops and eateries on Willoughby Road, which will breathe new life into the streets,” Mr Roberts said.
North Sydney Mayor Zoë Baker said the project will make a world of difference to the local community’s health and wellbeing.
“This park will set the tone for future developments in the area and inspire the incorporation of open space in new designs,” Mayor Baker said.
“This is so important right now, as we address the new population growth targets for Crows Nest and St Leonards and look for ways to balance the density proposed.”
